I remember as a child that my grandmother had taken in a young man into her house and gave him a place to live. I didn't think much about it at the time but looking back on it, she really saved his life. He was in a bad situation with one parent out of the picture and the other with a severe drinking problem. My grandmother took him in, gave him a room, made sure he had food and clothes, that he went to school, and was sure that he knew people cared about him. He went on to lead a normal successful life.
Pronounced like Sedaka, it is a Hebrew concept of Charity, but it goes a little deeper. Literally it translates to "do what is right and just". Like Tithing in Catholicism it is a mandatory obligation to help others wherever you can.
The three types of charities I focus on are those that benefits children, veterans and those who are in need of assistance most urgently.

Brian was involved with several other chapters in Maryland and Pennsylvania helping them with fundraising. recruiting and volunteer work. He sat on the board of a Pennsylvania chapter for years and still actively encourages the support of local chapters among his network and friends.
Big Brothers Big Sisters looks to help children of single parent homes through the appointing of a mentor or “big” to help offer guidance. Brian found that the process varied greatly from chapter to chapter on how to qualify “bigs” into the program, and because of that he has pushed for levels of uniformity that would help chapters with the time and cost involved in bringing on mentors for available “littles.”
The statistics of single parent children and those that are considered “at-risk” is rather grim. With the addition of the mentorship that BBBS brings to the table, the likelihood of positive outcomes in these children’s lives increases significantly.

Their outreach and mission is without exaggeration, awesome. Their mission is to empower veterans to feel self worth and a sense of “normalcy,” which is a common problem after suffering an injury or even exposure to harsh situations and conditions. It’s important to realize that all of the scars that our vets carry are not necessarily on the outside. Mental health issues play a large role in this.
Brian sat on the board of another charity that benefited veterans and from this and through years of developing friends that were in the armed services his passion for supporting our military was fueled.

RedCross.org is one of the best known charities in the United States. The Red Cross has in the past few decades focused their attention on both domestic disasters and international ones. Whenever there is a flood or an earthquake that has displaced the citizens of an area of the world the Red Cross is quick to show up with needed supplies and medical facilities. Be it an earthquake in Haiti, a Tsunami off of a small island coast, or flooding in Texas, the Red Cross is always quick to respond.
Brian has had a special relationship with the red cross since his days in college. Although being very “needle-averse” he like many others before and after him took the plunge and donated blood. Soon after donating he was told that his donations were used for babies because his blood tests negative for Cytomegalovirus (CMV) which is present in about 85% of adults, and can be harmful to babies that require a blood transfusion. That was all that he needed to know and he quickly looked past his aversion to needles and tries to donate as often as he can. He found the experience was rewarding and only requires about 45-60 minutes of your time from start to finish. Now with the Red Cross allowing donors to fill out their questionnaire prior to arriving (called “Rapid Pass”) the time has even gone down significantly from there. To date he has donated through several different chapters of the Red Cross but his total blood donations amount to roughly 9 gallons lifetime.
Whatever your passion is please try and give back society wherever it’s possible. Whenever you can donate to causes that are in need of resources. If you don’t have money to donate there are plenty of great organizations that are looking for volunteers. You will find that the experience is rewarding and in some cases enriches your life as much as the people you are helping.
When you take a deep dive you get a better view of things that you can't see from the surface
